Meeting My Students for the First Time as a Korean Language Teacher

After receiving my Korean language teaching certificate, more than three months have already passed since I began studying Korean with the children.

I want to remember the feelings and expectations I had at the beginning, and I also want to continue becoming someone who can truly help my students. So today, I would like to write down how I felt on that first day.

I thought I would be extremely nervous, with my heart pounding. But instead, I felt so excited that I wondered, “Could this be my calling?” I could not wait to meet the children. As a Korean language teacher, my mindset and motivation were truly strong.

The children came into the Korean classroom with their homeroom teachers.

Before starting the lesson, I had a brief conversation with each homeroom teacher based on the notes they had prepared about the areas where the children were struggling and the parts that needed additional support.

In the first period, I taught one first-grade student and two second-grade students together. In the second period, I taught one sixth-grade student.

The moment the three younger students looked at me with eyes full of curiosity, I felt a little nervous. Still, I briefly introduced myself and began the diagnostic test that I had thought about and prepared for a long time in order to check their Korean levels.

Unlike what I had expected, the children focused very well and worked hard on the questions, which surprised me. I did not use the word “test” because I thought it might be difficult to check their actual level if they felt too nervous, but perhaps it still felt like a test to them.

During the reading part, I noticed that the Vietnamese student and the Filipino student showed different pronunciation error patterns. Since pronunciation errors can vary depending on the sound system of a student’s first language, I realized that these errors cannot be corrected all at once.

A new question came to me during my very first lesson: “How can I understand pronunciation error patterns by country, and how should I correct them?” For now, the answer I received from AI was to help students become familiar with the sounds through repeated practice.

For the sixth-grade student, I was asked to focus on subject vocabulary and reading comprehension. So I included reading passages and questions that required the student to understand the context. I think this student will need to practice finding the main sentence in a passage and study essential vocabulary along the way.

My first Korean class made me feel a little nervous, but more than that, I felt excited about learning and growing together with my students.

Going forward, I want to become a Korean language teacher who understands each student’s linguistic and cultural background and helps them build confidence and interest in learning Korean through lessons that match their level and individual needs.

I also want to keep learning and working hard so that students from diverse backgrounds can naturally understand Korean language and culture and communicate with others more comfortably.
